Mongolia is divided into 21 provinces called aimags, plus the capital Ulaanbaatar, which has special municipality status. Each region has a distinct landscape, history, and cultural identity: taiga and freshwater lakes in the north, Kazakh eagle-hunting traditions in the west, dinosaur country in the Gobi, sacred imperial heartlands in central Mongolia, and immense grasslands in the east.
